The five Japanese vowels (a, i, u, e, o) are pronounced like those in Italian and
Spanish (i.e., father, ink, tube, élan, over). A long (i.e., doubled) vowel is indicated

The basic 19 consonants (b, ch, d, f, g, h, j, k, m, n, p, r, s, sh, t, ts, w, y, z) usually
are pronounced as in English.
